If you are thinking of adding a primate to your family and home, there are a few things to consider first. Having a primate is a huge responsibility and will require patience, lots of time and a lifelong pledge of care. Many people whom choose to get primates don't realize what this truly means. As with raising any animal or child, there will be ups and downs along the way. Primates are not for everyone, even if you dreamed of having one as a pet for years, it may not be the right choice for you.
Primate babysitters are not only hard to find, they can be very pricy as well. If you do traveling, a primate companian may not be allowed or welcomed. Overnight stays away from their owners can cause great emotional trama to your primate. It is best to find a qualified sitter who will take time to get familiar to your primate before you leave it in their care. Be sure your primate is comfortable before you leave it behind.
Primates are very smart, very strong and are wild animals. Even those that are bred in captivity are not domesticated. They can bite, scratch, pinch and be aggressive. It is also very hard to train primates, as they have very short attention spans.
Vet care for primates can be expensive and hard to find. Primates require shots, blood work and yearly checkups. Financing for vet care can be hard to do for many families.
Many states do not allow primates and others have special permits and requirements. Make sure you check local and state laws where you live before recieving a primate, some states can confiscate and keep illegal primates and persue sentences and /or fines to the owners.
Primates are social animals and require a lot of interaction. It is always best to have other primates and their families to meet up with for play dates. Always remember that they are a Primate and must be treated as such. We are raising them in a home, but they still need time to be a Primate.
Aquiring a primate can be difficult and expensive. There are many scam artist who prey on those wanting a primate. Offers that sound to good to be true, usually are. Also primates can not be shipped into the U.S.A. from other countries. This is illegal and if someone ask for money to ship to you from another country, please be aware that the monkey will never show up and you will lose your money. How do you know if the one you are dealing with is legal, ask for references or liscenses. If they can not produce them, find another one. You can lose a lot of money and experience great heart ache if your seller/breeder isnt ligit.
